Muskogee is a growing city – and its designation as an “Opportunity zone” may bring in even more new business. The idea is that investors can re-invest capital gains made through appreciation into an opportunity zone in exchange for lowered taxes on those gains. “Under the Opportunity Zone Program, if an investor reinvests a capital gain into an opportunity fund, they can defer and reduce their tax liability on that gain. Beyond that, they can also potentially receive tax-free treatment for all future appreciation earned through the fund.” An “Opportunity fund” is defined as a “US partnership or corporation that intends to invest at least 90 percent of its holdings in one or more qualified opportunity zones,” Synar said. The Port of Muskogee will be hosting a Federal Opportunity Zone Community Education Workshop to educate local residents and business owners on what Muskogee’s designation as an opportunity zone means for them. “McAfee and Taft have positioned themselves as experts on opportunity zones,” Synar said. “The Federal Opportunity Zone program will be another tool in our economic development tool box and is expected to make Muskogee even more attractive for investment,” Synar said.
